UX Architect
TEMEDA – Naperville, IL
TEMEDA is a B2B Saas business offering a GPS Fleet/Asset Management system, based on data from installed hardware. The main product is a web portal which displays asset data as actionable intelligence, which companies can use to reduce cost, improve utilization, and maximize productivity of their fleet.
Duties and Responsibilities
Led and developed all UX projects. Worked as a member of a cross-functional team including developers, marketers, data scientists, and business analysts, to promote and deliver consistent content. Redesigned, developed, and managed the company website. Developed the new company logo, the company-wide brand style guide, and the email marketing plan. Redesigned the core business product, creating a component library and establishing consistent visual layouts.
Research Methods
- Ran card-sorting exercises with users to determine the optimal information architecture for the help site, the company website, the mobile app, and the web app.
- Ran usability tests, both in-person and remote, to test the redesigns of the help site, the company website, the mobile app, and the web app.
- Ran field studies to assess how the app was used. Tested across a variety of scenarios and devices to find pain points to better guide app redesigns.
- Ran observational tests to determine layout and content strategy.
Content Strategy
- Developed email marketing strategy, advising on the layout, content, and overall goals of our email marketing.
- Created a new help site and developed its content strategy. Guided the improved content, layout, and information architecture. Overhauled the help site entirely, to better answer user questions and more clearly address the topics.
- Redesigned the company website, prioritizing content and explanations of the complex product.
Agile Development
- Used the Agile methodology for feature releases. Designed broad layouts quickly, refining the details throughout the sprint.
Leadership and Collaboration
- Purposefully worked across departments: solicited Customer Support feedback to guide marketing and development strategy, worked with Marketing as a representative from the Development team, and advised company leadership on content strategy and business goals.
- Recruited Customer Support technicians in the help site redesign. Used their feedback to determine the most effective information architecture and site layout. Worked collaboratively to establish a style guide for writing and formatting help articles.
- Worked closely with Development to determine effective UX strategies for future features. Established a process for feature design and development. Over the course of several months, converted the web app over to the new design, as we switched over to a new JS library.
Information Architecture
- Overhauled the entire architecture of the mobile app to better suit user goals, as established through user interviews and company-advertised features. I established a map- and dashboard-based layout for the two user goals: determining the location of assets and analyzing the data gathered. It was previously a single page with seven separate areas, which would narrow down into the individual assets: I reorganized it to better serve stated user goals of getting a broad overview, followed by a narrowing of focus to a specific asset.
- On the company website, evaluated company and customer goals via interviews, and reorganized the site architecture address those goals. The new architecture focused on explaining our expertise in the context of customer goals, rather than a listing of products we offered.
- Recategorized the help center structure, based on Google Analytics data and Customer Support data and interviews. Used user interviews and card sorting to establish new groupings and hierarchies. The new setup was focused on addressing common questions and user goals. The old help site was organized based solely on in-house categorization, in 18 broad categories; I reduced these to four focused categories with clear microcopy, which shepherded users to the appropriate help article. The new architecture improved the user self-help experience: calls to customer support decreased, as did the time per session and the number of pages viewed per session.
Navigation Design
- Ran a full audit of the sprawling web app (the core business product), and redesigned it from the ground up, working with developers to build a component library and create consistency.
- Redesigned the product web app to work towards the two most important user goals: using the map and analyzing the data. User feedback was universally positive.
- Developed a new app-wide layout in order to decrease development time, increase visual consistency, and improve feature discovery. Development time decreased drastically, especially concerning layout- and viewport-related bugs. Previously had features scattered over the entire screen: I audited the features available, then removed, grouped, and reorganized them. I built a component style guide, after doing a sitewide audit, which was incorporated and allowed a more consistent visual experience.
- Established a new navigation experience for the mobile app, to better suit user goals. on map- and dashboard-based layout for the two user goals: determining the location of assets and analyzing the data gathered.
- Redesigned help site homepage to shepherd users to the appropriate article, using user research to determine the most appropriate categories and articles.
- Adjusted help article layouts to be more scannable and readable. Improved summarization and typography to increase scannability. Applied verb-first, bulleted writing when appropriate, and created summary paragraphs for necessarily long content areas.
