Optimizing print-based brochures for web

A local community park district simply uploaded photos of their physical program book to their website. I was responsible for converting a physical pamphlet of community events and features to an online directory.

I converted image-only scans to a structured, searchable, accessible digital experience.

Problem

A local community park district simply uploaded scans of their physical program book to their website.

There are many problems with relying on image-only information, especially for a public park district.

  • Non-compliant with ADA web accessibility standards
  • Impossible to search for information
  • Not mobile friendly
  • Not tagged
  • Not standardized — every program used a different description, layout, and design in the program book.
  • No alt text

Solution

Using their preferred WordPress theme and extension, I improved their process by organizing how the information was presented and documenting the steps.

I optimized the information for web browsing: a brief description, followed by a clearly-labeled table with relevant information, responsive on all devices. Everything was standardized, for easy reading and searching. I used a plugin to make it easy to input information in the future.

I also wrote and recorded full documentation, with common problems and troubleshooting. Last I heard, things are running smoothly!
